I am so excited to share this recipe with you! I adore a delicious scone whether sweet or savory. These Citrus Scones with Orange Lime Glaze are absolutely fantastic, like seriously good! The dough is really easy to make and packed with bright hints of citrus, perfect for the warming weather. Fresh squeezed orange juice along with orange, lime and lemon zest throughout the perfectly tender scones. The Orange Lime Glaze adds another incredible layer of flavor.
The texture of these Citrus Scones is just perfect. The exterior is golden and crisp and inside is tender. I am a huge fan of citrus and love the brightness is color and flavor that it adds. By using the zest of the orange, lime and lemon you get amazing flavor without the intense sourness of the lime and lemon. The balance of sweet with the fruit is really wonderful.
I wanted to add another layer of flavor so came the glaze which is really so simple. Fresh squeezed orange and lime juice, powdered sugar and lime zest. I brushed it on each of the scones immediately after removing them from the oven so that the glaze is absorbed. It is really just a great finish to an already great scone.
- For the scones:
- 2 cups flour
- 1/4 cup sugar plus 2 Tbsp {divided}
- 1 Tbsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 egg
- zest of 1 orange
- zest of 1 lime
- zest of 1 lemon
- 1/4 cup buttermilk
- 1/4 cup fresh squeezed orange juice
- 6 Tbsp cold butter, small dice
- 1-2 Tbsp melted butter
- For the glaze:
- 1 Tbsp lime juice
- 1 Tbsp orange juice
- zest of 1 lime
- 4 Tbsp powdered sugar
- Preheat your oven to 400 degrees.
- Add the flour, 1/4 cup of sugar, baking powder and salt to a food processor fit with the dough blade.
- Add in the cold butter and continue to mix until the butter becomes incorporated and the pieces are about the size of peas.
- Add in the zest of the lime, lemon and orange and pulse just a couple times to incorporate it evenly.
- Add the dry mixture to a bowl.
- In a measuring cup mix together the buttermilk, orange juice and egg. Pour into the dry ingredients and stir with a spoon until the dry ingredients are mostly incorporated. You do not want to overwork the dough.
- Pour the dough out onto a very lightly floured surface {too much flour will leave you with a heavy dense scone}. Gently press together to form into a round about 1 inche high.
- Cut into 8 even triangles. Place onto a lined baking sheet and brush with the melted butter and sprinkle with the 2 Tbsp sugar.
- Bake for approx 22-24 minutes or until lightly golden.
- While baking, make the glaze by simply stirring together the orange and lime juice, the powdered sugar and lime zest.
- Once you remove the scones from the oven, brush all the glaze onto the scones. The hot scones will absorb some of the glaze.
